I offer far infrared sauna treatments, which differ from steam baths or other traditional saunas, as the air temperature is lower. As a result, rather than feeling exhausted after a treatment, you’ll leave feeling energised.

What is a Far Infared sauna?

An infrared sauna uses light to create heat.

Far Infrared rays (FIR) are invisible and present in sunlight and they were discovered by a scientist named Sir William Herschel in 1800. His research led to the discovery that there were not only the known visible rays – red, orange, yellow, green, blue and violet – but there were also invisible rays later named Infrared.

Approximately 80% of solar energy is made up of FIR and 60% is between the range of 10-20 microns.

FIR are the healthy rays contained in sunlight that are responsible for photosynthesis which is the process used by plants to produce energy and without which there would be no life on earth.

Whereas a traditional sauna uses heat to warm the air which ultimately warms your body; a Far IR sauna cuts out the middle stage and warms your body directly.

Generally, my clients will use a Far Infrared sauna because it results in similar reactions to exercise, such as an increased heart rate. Also the lower temperatures are appealing to people who can’t tolerate the heat of a traditional sauna.


Far infrared sauna benefits

With a 40 minute treatment typically burning up to 600 calories, there are many other health benefits of far IR saunas.


When you use a Far Infrared sauna, you’ll experience an increased blood circulation, and an improvement of oxygen supplied to the skin. This is due to your core body temperature increasing from the Far Infrared radiation, which also helps to improve the exchange of nutrients into cells in your body, which helps to rid your toxins.

Improved blood circulation

Your health depends largely on the movement of your blood and energy throughout. Using a FIR sauna encourages a healthy flow of nutrients to your body; and by dilating your blood vessels, your blood circulation will increase, without you feeling any stress in your system.

Strengthening of your cardiovascular and immune system

When your core body temperature rises, your immune chemicals increase, with the self-healing abilities in your body naturally becoming more effective. When your heart pumps blood at a greater rate, you’ll experience the same benefits as a cardio workout. Therefore, with your heart rate, cardiac output and metabolic rate all increasing, and your diastolic blood pressure dropping, you will see an improved physical fitness through the use of far IR saunas.

Weight control

By using a Far Infrared sauna, excessive moisture, salt and subcutaneous fat from your body will be expelled. As sweating is a natural complex thermo-regulatory system that results in an increased heart rate, metabolic rate and cardiac output, your body is consuming energy. The result? Potential weight loss, with your body sweating out toxins, fats and heavy metals that, without the use of a sauna, could stay in your body and cause damage later on in life.

Pain relief

The radiant heat found within a far IR sauna expands and dilates peripheral blood vessels; which brings relief to muscles and any soft tissue injuries. Not only that, but an increased blood circulation means that oxygen-rich blood is delivered to injured muscles, which helps to speed up your body’s natural recovery process. This means that the pain of arthritis, headaches, muscle spasms and back pain can be reduced.

Albert Szent-Gyorgi was a Nobel Prize Winner and the discoverer of vitamin C. He believed that all energy from the sun has profound effects on us and his research showed that light can literally stimulate the body’s basic biological functions. Modern research also shows that Far Infrared does indeed stimulate metabolism.

Far Infrared is Safe – Your Body Generates Far Infrared

Approximately 50% of the energy generated by your own body is in the form of Far Infrared rays. So FAR infrared is completely safe. (J Cardiol. 2008)

The human body generates FIR between 8-14 microns. When our bodies are heated by FIR rays the activity level of our atoms are increased and heat can be generated.

Night vision goggles used by the military detect the Infrared Rays generated by the body. Our bodies radiate Far Infrared energy through the skin at 3 to 50 microns, with most output at 9.4 microns. Our palms emit Far Infrared energy too, from 8 to 14 microns. Palm healing, an ancient tradition in China, has used the healing properties of Far Infrared rays for more than 3000 years and yogis in India also employ palm healing and recommend it especially for relieving eyestrain.
