Colonic irrigation
What is colonic irrigation?
Also referred to as colon hydrotherapy, colonic irrigation is an internal bath that helps to cleanse the colon (large intestine) of poisons, gas, accumulated faecal matter, harmful bacteria and mucus deposits. During colon hydrotherapy, filtered water is gently introduced into the colon, and special massage techniques are used to expel waste products and compacted deposits.
Colonic irrigation has been practiced for thousands of years and has its origins in Egypt, Greece and India. It is an integral part of a modern naturopathic approach to health and was used in hospitals until the 1970s . The ultimate detox, it’s a very safe and gentle treatment.

What happens during colonic irrigation?
Your first visit will take approximately between one hour, to one hour and fifteen minutes. We’ll look at your current diet and lifestyle, before explaining the colonic treatment and answering any questions you may have. I use a closed colonic hydrotherapy system, so there is no odour, and I carefully regulate the introduction of filtered water throughout the treatment.
During the colonic treatment, warmed, highly filtered water is gently introduced into the colon using a speculum. An inlet and outlet tube are attached to the speculum to allow the filtered water in and the waste to be piped away. Disposable equipment, fresh linen and gowns are used for all of my clients during the colonic bath, to make it fully hygienic.
Through the use of gentle massage and other techniques, I can work loose and eliminate far more toxic waste than any other short-term technique can. The colonic treatment can also help to tone, exercise and reshape your colon.
Don’t feel embarrassed, as your modesty and dignity will be preserved at all times. The bathroom is next door to the colonic hydrotherapy room, so you have easy access to the loo whenever you need it.
After the treatment, I will discuss the importance of diet in relation to the health of your colon, and recommend any beneficial changes you can make.
How many colonic treatments will I need?
The number of colonic irrigations you need will vary depending on your aims and current state of health. Older wastes that have built up over time may require more cleansing, and many people find that having a short course followed by occasional maintenance treatments can help them achieve their aims.
Other people find that one colonic detox hydrotherapy is a great way to cleanse their system, and leaves them feeling lighter and more energised. It is fine to come along and try one treatment to see how you find it, before deciding if you’d like future ones.

The healthy transit time of food through our bodies should be less than 24 hours. On average in the UK it is now 60 hours for men and 70 for women. Even those on a “good” diet can be surprised by the amount of faecal waste that has accumulated in their colon.
